Insider Monkey, a publication for investment strategies took a look at whether investors should invest in healthy. While more Americans are finding that eating healthy is vital, it was the belief that healthy food is often exchanged for price and accessibility.
That has changed.
According to Insider Monkey, “American’s perception of healthy foods has significantly changed. They started eating more home-cooked meals with their family as opposed dining in restaurants. Also, Americans started paying attention to the nutrition labels which contributed to them starting to eat healthier foods. From 1999 to 2012, the percent of eating poor-quality food decreased from 56% to 46%. The healthier turn has been reflected in local restaurants, which were forced to start making healthier products and offer nutrition information about each product.”
In 2012, food products which were sold by the 16 biggest fast food companies had a total of 6.4 trillion fewer calories than they did five years earlier according to a study sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. If we divide this number by each person, the results are astounding. Every person has consumed 78 fewer calories per day. Also, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Americans have also reduced their consumption of calories from total fat by 3.3%, while intake of saturated fat and cholesterol fell by 5.9% and 7.9%, respectively. It should also be noted that the daily consumption of fiber rose by 7.5%.
This is a huge change in eating habits, and because of it, fast food restaurants are finding it imperative to innovate and find alternatives to their menus of high-calorie products. It’s becoming more common to see healthy choices in some of the largest fast-food chains whether it is McDonald’s, Whataburger, or Chick-fil-a. People are noticing and wanting to learn about nutrition and become knowledgeable about their eating choices.
As consumers’ tastes and food choices change, restaurants must hurry and adjust their menus to accommodate them or lose them. For those who catch on and innovate, this will improve their sales, which Insider Monkey noted will be a positive sign for investors.
