The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in a stunning decision on November 19, 2015, approved the sale of the first genetically engineered animal intended for food and human consumption. That animal is, salmon!
The FDA has stated they do not believe the fish need to be labeled as genetically engineered (GE), obviously leaving consumers in the dark. Therefore, organizations such as the Center for Food Safety have launched a national campaign to keep genetically engineered salmon out of our supermarkets and restaurants. The Center for Food Safety has contacted the biggest grocery stores, seafood companies, and seafood restaurants to ask for commitments from these companies to promise that they will not purchase or sell genetically engineered salmon. You can download a list of the companies who have been contacted and their response here.
At Salmon Brokers, we are committed to providing our customers with only the finest cuts from natural sockeye and coho salmon — NOT GENETICALLY ENGINEERED SALMON! We oppose the FDA’s decision and hope pressure from the public as well as advocacy groups and organizations such as the Center for Food Safety will help spark a reversal of the FDA’s decision.
