What is Sriracha sauce and why is it in my salmon burger?
Sriracha sauce is a red hot sauce made with red jalapeño peppers, garlic, vinegar, salt, and sugar. It is hot and tangy as a great red sauce should be, but what sets it apart from the run-of-the-mill hot sauces is the hint of sweetness. It has a unique flavor that is addictive and very versatile. It is eaten on everything from omelets to vegetables, and now you can get it on your salmon burger. It is exceptionally delicious in our new Sriracha Salmon Burger.
Sriracha sauce has only been in the United States since 1980 when inventor David Tran immigrated from Vietnam and settled in Los Angeles. He started making his hot sauce when he couldn’t find any he liked in his newly adopted city. His sauce recipe is modeled after and named for the local hot sauces served in the small town of Sri Racha, Thailand.
Tran started selling bottles of his sauce and personally delivered them all over Chinatown. His addictive sauce became more and more popular, and when he couldn’t keep up with demand, Huy Fong Foods was born.
Fun facts:
- It is pronounced “Sir-rah-cha”.
- It is sometimes called Rooster Sauce, because of the prominent rooster on the bottle. The rooster is on the label because Tran was born in the Chinese year of the rooster.
- The sauce has such a broad appeal; the ingredients are listed in five languages on the bottle.
- Sriracha Sauce is not advertised, but today over 10 million bottles are sold every year.
